Goals

Revise the Education Act:

  1. Legislate governance of education to the Minister of Education and the ministry.
  2. The ministry to develop standardized basic policies and procedures with which all school boards must comply, to include collaboration with their municipalities and alignment with the initiatives of other ministries and a mechanism to appeal school board decisions to third parties.
  3. A clear definition of roles and responsibilities of the Minister, ministry staff, school boards, trustees, parents, students and educators, and the consequences for non-compliance.
  4. A standardized Pupil Accommodation Review procedure which all school boards must apply and a moratorium on all reviews until the ministry’s new procedure is available.  A moratorium on all disputed school closures recommended using the present Pupil Accommodation Review Guidelines  until these closures are re-evaluated using the ministry’s new standardized criteria.
  5. Have the revised Education Act effective the beginning of the 2012/13 school year.
  6. The Director of Education should be hired by and accountable to the Minister of Education ensuring the Education Act  and all policies or duly followed while taking direction from the trustees.
  7. All school board properties are transfered from the school board to the Minister of Education with the school board being responsible for their repair and maintenance.
